The "I have no idea what I'm talking about" defense

Orrin Hatch: "My comments about Carol Lam's record as a U.S. Attorney were accurate, but I misspoke when making the point of discussing politically connected U.S. Attorneys. I accidentally used her name, instead of her predecessor, Alan Bersin, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton."

In other words, it would be accurate, in Senator Hatch's mind, to say "Orrin Hatch raped and murdered dozens of young boys in the late 1970's and early 80's. Oh, wait, I accidentally used his name, instead of convicted and executed serial killer John Wayne Gacy."

Does he have any idea how mind-numbingly stupid he sounds?

The laughable part is of course that Carol Lam was the centerpiece of this whole scandal. She brought down Duke Cunningham and Dusty Foggo, and had Darth Cheney in her sights. And Hatch "misspoke." Right. He prepped for the most-watched Sunday show dealing with the most prominent figure fired in this huge scandal and "misspoke." Nope, old lawyer trick. Get the statement out there and no one hears the teeny little correction (the jury will disregard, can't unring a bell), the right wing noise machine picks it up, and then Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. are repeating it to their legion of mouthbreathers.
