So, is Lay reserving a place next to him for Skilling?

24 years. Might even be worth dying to try to get out of that one.

There is precedent for that -- i.e., saving a place for someone in the fires of hell. See chapter 19 (i.e. Canto 19) of Dante's Inferno.

Pope Nicholas III is condemned to the third pit of the 8th Circle of Hell, which is the final abode of those who sell church offices. These sinners are plunged head-first into holes, with flames burning on the soles of their feet.

When Dante and Virgil approach, Pope Nicholas at first mistakes Dante for Pope Boniface VIII, who is expected to arrive in hell in the not-too-distant future.
