Harriet Miers Withdraws

According to CNN.com, Harriet Miers has withdrawn from consideration to be the next Supreme Court Justice.

Who does Bush nominate next? Does he go ultra-right wing to appease his base? Is he too weak? Does he nominate his dad?

Look out, can you say Justice Priscilla Owens or Janice Rogers Brown? Torture Boy is out, he's too iffy on Roe v Wade. Michael Luttig and J Harvie Wilkinson are probabilities too.

Anyway, indictments and Fitzmas go off the talking points/front page with this withdrawal. A plus for Chimpy McCokespoon.

My take:
Short of a smoking gun to impeach Darth Cheney or Chimpy, Fitzmas is dwarfed by the SCotUS nomination.

For those who could stomach it, Waffen SS propagandist Charley Krauthammer predicted this outcome last week: http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showfast.html?article=62178

My guess is that the next name satisfies the neocon pundits, and sets off the fire alarms within the "Gang of 14"

And then we'd have nuculur war in the Senate!

I do think that if the indictments come down today, they'll push Harriet back down some. Of course, when I think of the front page, I think of the lead story on CNN.com or whatever news webpage you want to read - who reads newspapers anymore?

I give a great deal of credit to the GOP members of the "14." I don't know that a principled stand does them much good with mouth-breathers who make up a significant proportion of the GOP's "southern strategy" base. On the other hand, it HAS to help them with independents, as they tend to be more liberal on social issues than the average GOP voter.
My fervent hope is that the spectre of the "14" is enough to dissaude Chimpy (or more to the point, his handlers) from nominating a Luttig.
